The Benefits of Private Pay

Mental health treatment becomes part of your permanent health record when using insurance. When using insurance, I am required to give you a diagnosis - even for couples counseling, one person is required to be the identified patient and be given a diagnosis. Some psychiatric diagnosis are not reimbursable by insurance companies, and not every client will meet criteria for a reimbursable diagnosis. Having a diagnosis can be helpful in some situations but there are potential negative impacts: denial of insurance when applying for disability or life insurance or higher premiums; repercussions for current and/or future employment, security clearances, financial aid, specialty permits/licenses; and a diagnosis can be brought into a court case. There is some loss of confidentiality as claims are required to be submitted and processed. Insurance companies may only authorize a certain number of sessions at a time, which can negatively impact treatment. Insurance companies also have the right to request your file to conduct a ‘medical necessity audit’ which may include session notes.

While this information is meant to be transparent, it is not meant to discourage you from seeking mental health treatment and using insurance. Sometimes private pay isn’t a financial option, and it’s okay to use insurance. This is meant to encourage you to be an informed consumer.

Going through private pay means you and I are in charge of your counseling, not insurance companies. A diagnosis is not required to be on file, and we don’t have to worry about insurance being involved and impeding on your privacy.

Investment

Therapy is an investment in your mental health and life satisfaction. It can be hard for people to value the (mostly) intangible benefits of therapy, especially if you’re never been before or have had a negative experience. The emotional cost of your trauma, your difficult life circumstances, your low self-esteem, your struggling relationship - it’s high. Value yourself and your ability to be healed and happy - don’t keep putting this on the backburner until life has basically fallen apart.

When you have me as your therapist, you are getting my time, my expertise, my experience, and my commitment to continued training and consultation to learn how to better help you. I care deeply about my clients and their progress, and my goal is to help you achieve overall wellness so that you can handle more of what life brings.

For standard therapy sessions:

Initial intake session fee is $150.

50 minute session fee is $140.

EMDR Intensive fees are available upon request.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

•You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

•Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
